DUCK NECK CREEK

1908CreekBridge

The traditional boundary of Lordship was everything south of Duck Neck Creek. Using the 1893 map below as a guide, Lordship was an island until the mid 1890's when Frank Hopson built the dike road to Bridgeport. The only way to get into Lordship was by the bridge pictured to the right. It was possible to pilot a flat bottom boat from the Housatonic River at Sniffen's lane (north of today's basin entrance), go under the bridge, along Duck Neck Creek, into Lewis' Gut and into Bridgeport.

July 23, 1918 - FILLING IN NECK CREEK MAKES NEW ROAD TO LORDSHIP: Solid Drive Fixed Across Gully, Old Bridge Done Away With: Neck Creek that has been known for generations as the division between Stratford and what is now the Lordship park section of town is a creek no longer, as selectman James Lally has had a force of men working for a number of weeks past filling in a strip 45 feet wide across the hollow where the water used to come in. By the filling in of this hollow, the old bridge, that never was anything but a flimsy affair, is entirely done away with. Neck creek was only a creek by courtesy and the filling in of a stretch across will make no difference as the tide will ebb and flow from the Housatonic River, and from the creeks flowing in from the meadows toward Bridgeport. It was never a running stream here, the only water ever in the creek being that sent in by the rising tide. With the fixing of the solid drive across the gully that once was called the creek there is now a fine road all the way to Lordship from the center of the town.

October 16, 1923 - PLAN TO UNITE LORDSHIP CLOSER TO TOWN CENTER: Manager Hunter Proposes to Improve South Main Street to Bathing Beach: Improvement of South Main Street, from the corner of Stratford Avenue and Main Street (Hard's corner) all the way through to the bathing beach at Lordship is one of the projects which it is planned to carry through this coming year's road building program. The meadow road from Lordship to Hollister Avenue, Bridgeport, is in a bad condition at the present time and the road from Lordship to Stratford is not in much better shape. The meadow road is a private project however, whereas the other road is a town road. It is Town Manager R. H. Hunter's plan to put the road leading into Stratford into such shape that all the residents of the shore colony, who own automobiles will prefer to come up from the shore by the way of South Main Street, Stratford, rather than by cutting across the meadows toward Bridgeport. Located, as it is, some miles from Stratford Center, with salt meadows and farm lands intervening, Lordship has for many years been something of a community apart from the rest of the town. It is the town managers plan to bring Lordship into closer relationship with the town proper and he believes that one of the best ways to do this will be by giving the Lordship residents a good road, leading from their homes up into Stratford. When the new road is completed, it is believed that many people who now prefer to cut across the meadow road in their automobiles, will prefer to use the South Main Street route, even though it may be a trifle longer.

January 4, 1933 - ESTY GETS BASIN FOR MARINE BASE: Stratford Man Takes Over Airport Channel For Sports And Shipping: A modern marine base to be operated by Thomas Esty of Prospect Drive, Stratford will be opened soon at the airport channel, South Main Street, Stratford it was learned yesterday. The channel is owned by the Bridgeport Airport Inc. and has been operated during the past year as a fishing dock by George Egirt. Esty who is well known in Stratford has completed details of his lease of the land and plans to begin immediately the cleanup of his property. He is anxious to place it in condition for the winter storage of large vessels. He will open the basin for fishing, inboard and outboard motor boats in the spring. The land was formerly being considered as part of the Short Beach development area.

May 30, 1951 - CITY WILL REPAIR DIKE IN LORDSHIP: Averts Injunction Battle By Agreeing to Correct Flood Conditions: A scheduled injunction battle was averted in Common Pleas Court today when the City of Bridgeport agreed to make Dike repairs in the seaplane channel at the municipal airport, Lordship to alleviate flood conditions. A group of nearby residents and property owners sought a temporary injunction to compel the city to make repairs to the dike.
