LORDSHIP POINT

1876LighthouseSM

There are three points of land in Lordship. The most famous is Stratford Point at the mouth of the Housatonic River and the lighthouse is situated on. Point No Point is the second at what would later become the Seawall. The forgotten one is Lordship Point, which is located at the foot of Cove Place and Park Boulevard. The cliff was approximately 50 feet high and the site of the Lordship Airfield over 100 years ago.

November 8, 1940 - IMPROVEMENT PROJECT LAUNCHED BY LORDSHIP PARK ASSOCIATION: One of the most ambitious land improvement projects in this area was undertaken yesterday as workers started the task of removing more than 1,200,000 cubic yards of gravel from the 60 acres of land on Lordship Point. Improvement of the promontory which overlooks Long Island Sound and the lower portion of the Housatonic River will entail excavation of from three feet on the western end to about 25 feet on the eastern extremity. Fill removed from the acreage which is owned by the Lordship Park Association Inc. will be used to grade two parking lots of the Vought Sikorsky aviation concern and the Bridgeport Airport, now being extensively developed. About 60,000 cubic yards of loam will be set aside to be spread over the area upon completion of the grading. The work being done by Pascone Brothers Inc. will continue well into 1942 according to Anthony Pascone. Although it has no plans for the immediate development of the area, the Lordship Park Association found it advantageous to dispose of the gravel to the Pascone Brothers. The contracting firm has offered the material to the city of Bridgeport for airport fill in 10,000 and 15,000 cubic yard quantities. Many residents of the 600 acre section of Stratford will obtain a view of Long Island Sound when the promontory east of Lordship village is reduced to a grade of no more than three and one half percent. After grading two Vought Sikorsky fields, one across from the plant on Main Street and the other north of it, the Pascone Brothers will surface them with 62,000 square yards of bituminous asphalt. The two fields will be used for parking 3,000 autos.

November 10, 1940 - LORDSHIP POINT WILL DISAPPEAR: The famous historic Lordship Point, a promontory overlooking Long Island Sound will be no more. It went into the hands of wreckers on Thursday. The owners will remove the high land in a gigantic improvement project by the Lordship Park Association Inc. Shovels and trucks of Pascone Brothers were at work Thursday on the beginning of the contract starting at the waters edge. The job is termed one of the most ambitious examples of similar projects ever undertaken in the area where natural land formation has faced remodeling to meet modern requirements.
