September 2, 1938: TRUMBULL HAS GAS STATION IN LORDSHIP: New Place Is Opened At Prospect Drive In Lordship District: Alexander Trumbull and Donald Trumbull will open the Trumbull Filling Station at Prospect Drive in Lordship on Friday, it was announced this week. The opening of the new modern gasoline service station marks the first time that a business of this type has ever been conducted in the Lordship area. Although much opposition has always been registered by residents of the beach area to new business within the community, the Trumbull petition was granted unanimously by the planning board and the board of zoning appeals when property owners reported no opposition to Mr. Trumbulls venture. Mr. Trumbull, well known in Stratford where he has resided for many years, plans one of the finest service stations and grounds in the town. In addition to the Colonial-Cape Cod type of building which was erected for him by Hessels and Sharon of Lordship, Mr. Trumbull will landscape the grounds and plant many flowers and shrubs. The Texaco station will have three gasoline pumps and with the exception of the one large Texaco sign will have no other advertising on the premises. Located at Prospect Drive and Washington Parkway the station is at the Bridgeport entrance to the Lordship district. It will provide complete and adequate illumination for a dark area giving motorists sufficient light at the main traffic circle. Cinder and gravel driveways have been constructed around the station and a service pit has been constructed on the northeast side of the building. A porch effect on the front of the structure gives it the appearance of a Cape Cod dwelling. The work was an all Stratford project with the H. C. Lovell Company doing the plumbing, Harvey Hutchinson, the electrical work, Sharon and Hessels, general construction, Carl Johnson, painting and Don Carten, grading.
